Lonely, 9 year-old Willie Morris receives a dog for his birthday and names him Skip. Willie and Skip become the best of friends, with Skip always watching out for Willie. With Skip by his side, Willie's life becomes more enriched, as he makes new friends and becomes more outgoing. As time goes by and Willie grows older, Skip gets left behind. A close call with death for Skip helps Willie to realize that Skip has always been there for him.
